Our purpose

Islamic thought must speak
to the age in which we live.

The Tajalli Institute for Philosophical Research aims to set in motion a multifaceted renewal of Islamic thought and practice through foundational methodological renewal.

The proposal identifies a disconnect between the intelligibility of inherited philosophical frameworks and the conditions of modernity. Its response is neither to dismiss kalām and traditional Islamic philosophy nor to preserve them as historical artifacts, but to reexamine their methodological foundations as a living tradition.

The work of renewal begins with the foundations of understanding.

For the Institute, a robust educational worldview requires both a foundation in demonstrative reason and critical engagement with the intellectual challenges of the present.

The methodological vision

Revelation. Logic. Metaphysics.

Faculty holism

The proposed framework explicitly synthesizes revelation, logic, and metaphysics. It investigates the continuity of intelligibility across different orders of human experience, and the relation of discursive and receptive reason to being.

A critical conversation across traditions

The research reevaluates late-kalām, Avicennan, ishrāqī, and Akbarian starting points alongside the foundations of modern thought, including Kantian, Hegelian, phenomenological, and existentialist approaches, as well as Thomist, Ockhamist, and Cartesian traditions.

Three volumes · A proposed three-year programme

The proposal places the writing and development of one volume in each year. The journal, seminar, and workshops are planned to continue throughout the programme. This is a proposed sequence, rather than a calendar of confirmed release dates.

01
YEAR ONE / VOLUME I

Metaphysics

Reconsidering the starting point of metaphysics and the prospects of theoretical reason for metaphysical knowledge.

  • The rootedness of discursive and receptive reason in being.
  • A renewed principial foundation for metaphysics through faculty holism.
  • Continuity of intelligibility across the orders of human experience.
  • Engagement with Islamic philosophical schools and thinkers from Plato and Aristotle to Kant, Hegel, Husserl, and Heidegger.

02
YEAR TWO / VOLUME II

Metaprincipial Logic

Investigating the metaphysical grounding of logic and the possibility of a metaphysically “vertical” logic.

  • Reevaluating Aristotelian, Avicennan, Suhrawardian, Gelenbevian, and Biharian logic.
  • Transcendentals and metaprinciples as logical operators.
  • A critique of modern logic attentive to its successes.
  • Logical form and matter, Platonic dialectic, Hegel, and an expansion of Gödel’s work beyond a syntactical interpretation.

03
YEAR THREE / VOLUME III

Theophology

A reevaluation of theology explicitly synthesized with logic and metaphysics.

  • The deep structure of intelligibility of the Qur’an as revealed word.
  • Revelation’s relationship to the assent patterns of our innate cognitive structures.
  • The mutual reinforcement of “descending” revelation and theophany with “ascending” deductive metaphysics.
  • A faculty holism continuous with a hierarchically grounded account of reality.

Research, publication & teaching

From foundational inquiry
to a wider intellectual life.

Proposed programmes
01 / ENGAGEMENT

USA-wide workshops

Training for the wider community in the principles and method of The Rebirth of Universal Science, in selected locations around the United States.

The proposal envisages two or three workshops per year, combining teaching with substantive dialogue across divergent—and even opposed—philosophical perspectives.

Teaching principles · Developing practice
02 / COLLABORATION

The internal seminar

An invited core group of scholars contributing to the Institute’s research, with systematic training in The Rebirth of Universal Science and Principle and Arbitrarism.

The proposed format combines monthly online meetings with two in-person meetings each year.

Research · Training · Dialogue
03 / PUBLICATION

A biannual journal

A proposed journal extending the project’s methodological renewal into metaphysics, logic, ethics, philosophical politics, consciousness, philosophy of science, theology, aesthetics, modernity, and comparative methodology.

Two issues per year are envisaged, beginning alongside the wider research programme.

Foundational inquiry · Wider implications
Sustaining the work

A community committed
to intellectual renewal.

Invitation and commitment

The intended circle would grow gradually through relationships formed at USA-wide workshops. Contributions are understood as a commitment to the Institute’s vision and steady engagement with its work.

Following the initial three-year development period, the proposal allows for consideration of premises for full-time classes and course offerings, potentially alongside a public centre for intellectual and spiritual pursuits.

These are proposals for development. Contribution arrangements and future premises are not presented here as active offerings.
